New York, NY– Kywuan Terrell Warren was just 11 years old when his mother, Jamila T. Davis, was sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison for bank fraud. In her absence, Kywuan and his sister, Diamond Baker, struggled to sustain the lifestyle that their single mother once provided. Kywuan says, “When the judge sentenced my mother to over a decade behind bars, I thought my life was over. I don’t think he realized by punishing her so harshly, he was actually punishing me!”
Kywuan was accepted to a major university but was unable to afford the tuition. He discussed his dilemma while visiting his mother in federal prison. Together they decided to create outerwear apparel for men as a business. Kywuan brought the design ideas to his mother, then she would go back to her cell, and hand-crocheted each sample. The mother and son creative duo went back and forth until the entire line was complete. The line, The Kywuan Terrell Outerwear Collection, includes trendy, hooded scarves and arm warmers. “It took some time, but we were dedicated. I was able to find some of the greatest hands-craftsmen in the world to manufacture our garments. Each piece is crocheted by hand using 100% high-quality, alpaca thread. Kywuan says, “Each garment in the collection is custom made with love and care, just like the originals that my mother made for me!”
There are over 2 million children across the US whose parents are behind bars. Kywuan is one of the lucky ones. He is currently an honor roll student at a local community college. Armed with a supportive team and determination, the Kywuan Terrell Outerwear Collection is created and highly sought-out by fashion icons, celebrities, and NBA Ballers. Ne-Yo, Jason Terry, James Hardin, and Carmelo Anthony are among those to wear garments from The Kywuan Terrell Outerwear Collection.
